A school is an educational establishment designed primarily to offer learning zones and learning environments specifically for the education of students. In most industrialized countries, however, a school consists of several schools. In these systems, different students progress through various stages of learning. This system of schooling can be traced back to the Middle Ages, when schools were established as a means of imparting knowledge to younger generations.

Schools today serve many different purposes. They are places of learning, where pupils are taught a wide variety of subjects under the supervision of teachers and trained professionals. They can also be places of service, where parents and other adults are taught important lessons in the daily lives of children. The primary education system usually starts at nursery schools, where children are educated about the basic subjects like counting, measuring, reading, and writing. These days, primary schools and nurseries have become the primary education system of most developed countries.

Secondary schools are institutions, sometimes attached to primary schools, where students complete a different type of education. Students who have passed the primary level of education may opt for higher studies in the secondary school. The subjects taught in secondary schools range from arts, humanities, science, and biology to commerce and occupational training. Advanced Studies, or vocational schools, follow a different curriculum from primary schools and prepare students for specific jobs in industry or for employment in government. A large number of students now attend vocational schools instead of public or private schools and are called dropouts.

A term school, a short form of primary or secondary school, is a kind of educational facility run by a local government or by a privately owned company. The term school building may refer to both types of establishments. A term school can be a small school building or a large, complex structure like a school building. Both primary and secondary schools have well appointed and equipped halls, teachers, classrooms, library, laboratories, and other necessary equipment. The facilities for teaching and learning are adequate for learning and studying. In some parts of the world, public primary schools and public or private secondary schools are listed separately.

One type of educational institution is a college. It is either a technical or a vocational school that offers degrees, diplomas, and academic training. Students enter these schools by completing their grades in elementary or secondary schools; however they may also enter through placement programs, lottery draws, or admissions. Most people enter a career college through a direct admission program, which may require an essay, a physical exam, or a written record. Some colleges accept candidates who have not finished high school.

The United States has the most variety of educational institutions available to young people than any other country in the world. Almost every state offers at least two types of secondary schools: (a) public schools which are publicly funded; (b) private schools which are supported by tuition fees from parents. In general, the performance of students is not very high when it comes to reading and writing skills and mathematical ability. However, all educational institutions in the united states offer students the opportunity to earn a full university degree. Students should make sure that they choose the best school to attend for their academic aspirations.
